What is the Best Steelhead Spinner Fishing Technique?

Cast slightly upstream or across, then slowly retrieve your steelhead spinner cross/down-current.  That's it (if your current circumstances permit).  I've caught more fish using this steelhead spinner method than any other approach.  When you ask:  "What is the best steelhead spinner fishing technique?"...

...you should know about all of your other options as well.  Then, in case my favorite routine is not suitable for your bank or boat steelhead spinner fishing situation...

Your steelhead fishing technique can be tailored specifically according to:

  • Water conditions

  • Boat or bank river accessibility.  Example:  Casting your steelhead spinner down and across is your only option... because there's too much brush in front of you, and wading is impossible

  • Water type

  • Other information you'll need to make the proper steelhead spinner presentation which we'll provide as well

Let's Cover other Steelhead Spinner Fishing Techniques:

  • My #1 steelhead spinner approach:  Worth repeating...  "What is the best steelhead spinner fishing technique?"  Casting your spinner slightly upstream or across, then slowly retrieving it back is deadly.

Only reel fast enough to achieve blade rotation.  Most of my steelhead takes are when it's starting to swing, but expect a steelhead spinner grab anytime.

  • Drifting your steelhead spinner:  Cast upstream and drift your steelhead spinner while keeping slack out of your fishing line.  Let it swing around.  Hook-ups occur throughout the entire drift.

  • Jigging your spinner for steelhead:  While drifting your steelhead spinner as noted above... slowly raise and lower your fishing rod.  Change frequency and vertical distance until you find what works.  Fish your steelhead spinner until it's down below you.  Steelhead usually hit on the drop (not always).

  • Down and across:  Cast your steelhead spinner down and across at about 45 degrees.  Let your spinner swing around or retrieve slowly while swinging.  You'll get hit anytime.

  • Casting your steelhead spinner downstream and retrieving back:  Cast your summer or winter steelhead lure downstream and retrieve back through the prime steelhead holding water.

  • Cast upstream:  You'll need to reel fast to keep slack out and stay in control.  I only use this steelhead spinner fishing technique if it's my only option to access the best steelhead holding water.

All of these effective steelhead spinner fishing techniques can be used in all water conditions.

Covering Water Properly While Fishing Your Spinner for Steelhead.

  • Make no more than 2-3 casts in the same spot

  • Off-color or clear/cold:  Make your casts 2-3' apart

  • Warm and clear steelhead holding water:  Make your casts 3-6' apart

This steelhead spinner casting sequence is not set in stone... only a rough guide.

I enjoy spinner fishing for steelhead and salmon because I can cover a lot of prime steelhead holding water.  Usually, if I don't nail a fish on my second or third cast in the same spot, I keep fanning out my casts and/or move on to another stretch of water.

“What if the steelhead are moving up-river or moving around in the same stretch of river?”  Casting your steelhead lure in the same spot, over and over, can pay off.

When Asking: What is the Best Steelhead Spinner Fishing Technique?...

...Consider the following circumstances affecting your approach:

  • Water conditions: Is the steelhead river running high or low?  Is the water clear, off-color, cold or warm... what is the best fishing water temperature?

  • Bank or boat fishing for steelhead (river accessibility):  How well can you access the steelhead holding water?

  • “What is the best steelhead fishing weather?”  Sunny and hot vs cold and cloudy... big difference.

  • Different types of steelhead spinner water:  For example... fast and deep or shallow and slow.

  • Time of day:  At times, especially during low, warm, and clear water conditions... catching steelhead in different areas of the river comes into play.

"What is the best steelhead spinner technique to use when it's dark?"  I like to use a spinner with a big blade... it pushes more water.  I feel the steelhead can sense this vibration with their lateral line.

Other Steelhead Spinner Fishing Considerations for Success

  • Steelhead Spinner selection:  Choosing the proper spinner for the current steelhead fishing conditions with my first cast of the day is a priority.  Going through your tackle box all day long until you select the “best” steelhead spinner is a waste of time!

  • Line:  “What's the best fishing line for steelhead... braid, monofilament, or fluorocarbon?”

  • Steelhead fishing reels:  What's the best reel to use when I'm spinner fishing for steelhead?

  • Rod:  The best spinner rod for steelhead fishing requires proper length and design

  • Added weight:  Some steelhead spinner fishing weights (set-ups) snag easier than others

  • Best fishing knot for lures?  I've been using the clinch knot for salmon and steelhead spinner fishing for over 30 years

  • Snap/swivel:  Only use your fishing snap swivel in specific situations

Steelhead Spinner Fishing Difficulties I've Faced

Preventing My Steelhead Spinner from Snagging the Bottom

Knowing the proper depth and using the correct type of added weight and set-up...

...should help keep you from losing your favorite spinner.

What is the Best Steelhead Spinner Fishing Technique to use...

...for properly hooking and playing a fish?

Setting the hook:  Keep your rod pointed at your steelhead spinner... the lower, the better.  Occasionally, I'll keep my steelhead spinner fishing rod higher than this in certain situations.  Also, keep your line tight and you'll achieve a good hook-set.

Tip: Playing Your Steelhead Properly

Fighting your Fish:  Keep your rod low using side pressure.  Under certain situations you might need to keep your steelhead fishing rod high (eg., keeping your steelhead away from snags).  Keeping your line at about 90 degrees to your rod butt for is ideal for maximum rod leverage.

Landing your steelhead quickly as possible results in a safe release.

When you ask:  "What is the best steelhead spinner fishing technique?"  I feel this is the MOST IMPORTANT.

Keep your fishing hooks sharp!  Period.

What is the best Steelhead Spinner Hook to use?

Opinions vary.  There are pros and cons when it comes to choosing the correct hook for your steelhead spinner.

I usually use treble hooks... I feel they provide better steelhead spinner balance (less wobbling).  I really don't know if it makes a difference.

Should I Use Treble Hooks?

They provide...

  • Better spinner balance

  • More hooks for holding power but... additional hooks act as a lever to pry hooks free.  However...

  • Treble hooks snag the river bottom more frequently

Using Single Hooks with Your Spinner

  • Snags less (river bottom and other fish)

  • Less hooks to act as a pry

  • Balance... your spinner might wobble more

What's the Best Steelhead Spinner Colors and Sizes?

When you arrive on your river... being able to access the current fishing conditions, while making the correct steelhead spinner choice...

First cast of the day... is key!

Whole books are written about this topic.  Here's the best little paperback book on this planet... a must-read!  Here's a link to another steelhead spinner Page on our site that will also help...

When a Steelhead Grabs Your Spinner:

“What should I expect?”  You'll know!

Most Common Steelhead Spinner Bites

Cold water:  Usually my steelhead spinner will stop as if I was snagged on the river bottom.

Warm water:  Same as above but you'll also get a lot of real hard, aggressive takes (hang on to your fishing pole!).

All Water Temperatures

Jigging your spinner for steelhead:  Usually, a steelhead will eat your spinner on the drop.  Usually... you won't feel anything.  Stay alert.

Slacker:  A steelhead will grab your spinner and swim towards you.  Sometimes I won't feel anything but slack line.  Other times I'll feel a “tink”... then slack.

What is the Best Steelhead Spinner Fishing Technique:  From the Bank or a Boat?

I've never fished spinners (or any other method) for steelhead from a boat.  I like to exercise and enjoy staying warm!  However... fishing steelhead spinners from a boat has more advantages...

  • Fishing closer to the fish... more control and a better hook-set

  • Access to more steelhead holding water

  • Easy landing... knowing how to use a landing net properly in deeper water vs dragging your fish into shallow water

  • No obstructions

  • No slippery rock river wading

  • No repairing leaking fishing waders

Pointers and Trouble Shooting

  • Feel the thump, thump of your steelhead spinner blade.  Reel only fast enough to feel your steelhead spinner blade rotating.  A small spinner blade is harder to feel.  A slow rotation is like a strobe light blinking... not on all the time

  • Barely tick the bottom with your steelhead spinner... more on this below

  • Keep your hook sharp.  Carry a fishing hook file or stone

  • Check leader regularly.  If it's damaged, change it

  • Check the clevice (attaches blade to wire shaft)  If the clevice is damaged, your spinner blade rotation will be compromised.  If needed...repair it with needle-nosed pliers.

Steelhead Spinner Presentation Based on Water Conditions

How Fast Should I Retrieve My Spinner?

Dirty/off-color river water:  Slower the better.

Clear/warm:  Slow... but also mix in some faster steelhead spinner retrieves.

Clear/cold:  Slow.

This steelhead and salmon spinner is made by a local business.  We carry lots of different colors and finishes...

Reeling in after Completing Your Steelhead Spinner Technique

  • Dirty/off-color:  Warm... they might follow it in.  Cold... just reel in your steelhead spinner for the next cast

  • Clear/warm:  Warm water steelhead are more aggressive... they'll follow it in occasionally

  • Clear/cold:  When you've completed your steelhead spinner presentation, just reel it in.  It's very seldom a fish will follow it in

How Close Does My Steelhead Spinner Need to be?

While deciding "What is the best steelhead spinner fishing technique for the day?"...

The following factors are some of the most important:

Dirty/off-color:  Fish really close to the river bottom.  An occasional “tick” is ok.

Clear/warm:  Steelhead will move great distances to eat your spinner in clear, warm water.  Feeling your spinner tick the bottom is not necessary.

Clear/cold steelhead river water:  Same as dirty, off-color water.

Tidewater Steelhead Spinner Fishing

Tidewater Tip:  Spend More Time Fishing Here

I've caught lots of steelhead in the tidal portions of Oregon coastal Winter and Summer Steelhead streams.

There's been little or no competition!

Much of the information on this Page applies to tidal fishing as well.  Exceptions below are explained on our salmon spinner Page or here:

1.  Time of tide.

2.  Saltwater maintenance.

3.  Seals:  “What is the best steelhead spinner fishing technique if seals are working the hole?  Chances are there's fish around.  I've accidentally hooked seals and lost my whole steelhead fishing set up, line and all!  Or... I've had seals eat my steelhead and salmon while fighting the fish!

4.  Weather influences.

5.  Rigging.

6.  Lower tidewater vs upper tidewater.

7.  Techniques:  Same as when you're spinner fishing for steelhead in freshwater... listed above.

8.  Covering water with my steelhead spinner:  I tend to spend a lot of time in one spot, casting over and over if I see fish rolling or I'm bumping fish.  Also, steelhead and salmon will move around (or enter from the ocean) at different times of the ocean tide.  Knowing when they'll “show up” comes from experience.

9.  “How deep should I fish my spinner?”

What is the Best Steelhead Spinner Fishing Technique?

Experience.  Just do it.  Think of it like this...

An experienced, persistent, steelhead spinner fisherman with a low quality spinner, will catch more fish than a...

...fisherman with the best spinner who is fishing in the wrong place (and not using the proper steelhead spinner fishing technique).

When I go steelhead fishing... I'm on a mission.  I put in a full day (time permitting).  I'm prepared.  I'm focused.  Maybe it's because my steelhead spinner fishing days are limited.

Keep researching but be careful... there's a lot of internet keyboard artist that are copying other steelhead fishing website content.  AI copies content as well.

I came across this fishing forum... participants are beginners, veteran steelhead spinner fishermen, and everyone in between.  They aren't trying to sell you something  :-)
