On the topic of feedback... we're going to start covering wild edibles of the Hebo area coast range hills. I harvest these year-round... I use them in my tea and veggies! Have any thoughts about this?
I picked these wild dandelion greens and roots...
I harvested the wild dandelion roots all Winter... that's where most of the nutrients are, when the green tops aren't growing

As long as the water color of your favorite Oregon Coastal Winter Steelhead stream is ok... you can catch fish during high water flows...
...if your river isn't rising and chocolate brown!
Change your tactics. Do you agree or disagree? Let us know here.
These Nestucca River System Chinook are from last year. I'm not sure if they're Springers or Fall Chinook. Just wanted to get you excited (at least I'm being honest)...
...about upcoming Hebo area Spring Chinook season......

We'll be adding fishing updates/news to our Hebo Sporting Goods and Deli Blog for your favorite Tillamook area salmon and steelhead rivers.
Last year, April 15th, I was running up Gauldy Mt Road above Three Rivers Hatchery. On the way down... two Spring Chinook fisherman returned from the Heart Attack Hole. One fellow was packing a Three Rivers Spring Chinook about 15lbs. Just food for thought.
More Winter Steelhead fishing sunshine and success...
Happy Hebo Sporting Goods Winter Steelhead fisherman!
When the Oregon Coastal Winter Steelhead Rivers become lower and colder, make sure you've got a steelhead rod rigged up, ready to go with your favorite spinner, plug, or other type of lure.
Furthermore, Winter Steelhead prefer slower flows during low, cold, clear water conditions. Marabou Jigs (really flies) shine here. Just the slightest breeze and it wiggles and undulates! We've got 'em.

Check out the Big Nestucca River forecast graph. Keep an eye on
our Hebo weather as well. The Nestucca River is currently at 5.35'.
A Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook...
...caught by a Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods happy customer last Spring...
Good job!
Good job!Bobber, hardware and drift fishing: These techniques are all productive while boat or bank fishing for Oregon Coastal Fall and Spring Chinook or Winter/Summer Steelhead.
Steelhead and salmon bait: Here's some suggestions.
If you think you're using red but it's black as viewed by the fish... are you ok with that? Check this out!
Pacific City area (salmon): When to fish here and some interesting facts I've picked up over 30+ years of Big Nestucca River tidewater fishing!
I've caught Spring Chinook over the years (one here and there)... fishing Spinners from the bank at the Pacific city Guard Rail Hole in April. An unweighted chinook spinner, with a 3/4 oz bank sinker, attached 2' up your leader with a snap swivel... is pretty standard.
Cloverdale: Head of tidewater... this can be a very productive Big Nestucca salmon and steelhead fishery. Still borderline high now.
Winter Steelhead: When the Nestucca River gets extremely low, fish from Pacific City all the way up to Cloverdale (tide-effected here)...
...including up to the mouth of Three Rivers.
IF THE BIG NESTUCCA RIVER DROPS TO REALLY LOW LEVELS... SERIOUSLY CONSIDER TIDEWATER FISHING FOR WINTER STEELHEAD.
Pacific City/Big Nestucca tidewater will be off-color with a lot of debris a good part of the time during late Fall, Winter and early Spring.
Take a walk on Cape Kiawanda Beach in Pacific City... BRING YOUR KIDS AND DOGS :-) However... The Oregon coastal weather looks excellent today!
"Out-going" current most of the time due to the large amount of fresh water except during a strong incoming tide. This is a good time to try some beach combing!
Salmon Fishing the Big Nestucca river tidewater: Tips for fishing from a boat or the bank.
When the Little Nestucca River drops to low, clear Winter Steelhead fishing conditions...
Concentrate on the lower river as well as tidewater for bright Winter Steelhead.
You should find some Winter Steelhead while fishing on the Little Nestucca River throughout April even though...
March is the top month.
If you catch a wild Winter Steelhead, please leave it in a couple feet of water, wet your hands, THEN quickly raise it out of the water for a picture.
Get it back into the water as quickly as possible and make sure it swims off under it's own power.
There is no other way to safely release a steelhead, salmon, or any other fish.
If you don't wet your hands, you'll remove the slimy protective coating.
Just like Castle Rock Park area on Three Rivers, the upper Little Nestucca River will raise and drop quickly.
For those of you that like a clear, decent flow of water...
Is it hard to figure out where your Winter Steelhead is lurking?Fish way up high on this Tillamook County Winter Steelhead gem first following a high water.
If low, clear water is your thing... fish the upper Little Nestucca River when the Big Nestucca is running 6' or less.
I've caught Sea-Run Cutthroat and Summer Steelhead fishing up here during the Winter and Spring. Little Nestucca Summer Steelhead will have a red stripe but they retain some glimmer, unlike "dark" Winter Steelhead. If they're mating on the spawning beds... leave them alone.
Here's an option, using the Big Nestucca River as a gauge, If it's 8' and dropping!
Winter Steelhead fishing conditions on the upper Little Nestucca river: Water level is low.
Lower river: Little low but still very fishable, especially right above tidewater/Logger's Bridge.
After a really high river raise...
When it quits raining and the Little Nestucca River tributaries clear up...
You can catch Winter Steelhead or chinook right in the confluence of the little feeder creeks and the main stream off-color water.
This applies to your favorite Oregon coastal steelhead and salmon river as well.
Little Nestucca fly fishermen: "What type of Winter Steelhead fly rod should I use?" This might be useful.
Persistence pays off...
Good way to take your mind off work!
Good way to take your mind off work!...when fishing for fresh, chrome, Oregon Coastal Winter Steelhead like this one!

Drift fishing, bobber fishing and other Little Nestucca River salmon and steelhead fishing techniques...
WE'LL BE COVERING THESE IN THE FUTURE (we haven't forgotten... been really busy!).
You can find lots of tackle that floated down the Big or Little Nestucca rivers here! Check out tidewater or on the beach... close to the mouth of the Big Nestucca River. Also... It gets stranded on Cape Kiawanda in that little cove, lower-right in the picture below.
I also forage for seaweed, a wild edible that I eat...
You can eat this Cape Kiwanda seaweed raw or dried
You can eat this Cape Kiwanda seaweed raw or dried101 Bridge area and above: Fish all the way up to the head of tidewater!
The Little Nestucca tidewater fishing conditions are fine today. I saw some seals working above the Little Nestucca River 101 Bridge Wednesday, April 22.
You can catch Winter Steelhead here when the water conditions are suitable... you'll have it all to yourself! Bring your kids and dogs... they can run all around with no worries! Stop off at our Hebo Little Nestucca Deli for a picnic lunch.
Keep in mind... Chinook Salmon will still slow down and possibly hold in tidewater for a spell...
...when the water drops considerably really late in the Fall during Little Nestucca Chinook Salmon season. There won't be anyone else fishing here at this time.
Some years, Big Nestucca Spring Chinook venture into Little Nestucca Tidal areas.
Watch Those Seals!
No competition from other Little Nestucca Winter Steelhead fishermen...
...doesn't mean you won't catch a fresh, chrome, Little Nestucca tidewater Winter Steelhead. The seals are up here for a reason... keep an eye on their behavior.
As noted above... I've caught Little Nestucca tidewater Winter Steelhead during low water periods. There's no reason you can't catch them down here during normal Winter and Spring water flows as well.
Salmon and low-water Winter Steelhead: Try fishing a fly below your bobber!
No success with your "hot" Hebo Tackle Shop spinner? Try casting and retrieving a Quickfish or other plug.
Also... rig up a good-sized flasher with one single or treble hook. Cast and retrieve it from the bank. This was a hot commodity back about 15-20 years ago. The bunch that owned Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine started this Chinook Salmon craze down at the Nestucca River Pacific City boat ramp...
We've got a good selection here at our Hebo Tackle and Bait Shop.

I noticed JR added some little wobbler/flashers about 2" long on a rack behind the counter on the wall... check 'em out. Might work for steelhead as well since they're small.
Happy Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods and Deli fisherman...
Does anybody miss Fall Chinook fishing?
Does anybody miss Fall Chinook fishing?Unlike other Nestucca River fisheries, the hatchery does fish in turbid, high water. In the old days... we fished here when the Nestucca River was 10' and less (5.35' now) or even higher when dropping... seriously! Use heavier salmon and steelhead fishing gear.
When Three Rivers drops and clears after being high and roily...
Park behind Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods and walk downstream. I start fishing for Winter Steelhead here on Three Rivers...
...when the Big Nestucca River is running about 6.5'-7' and less while dropping. Or... fish in the S-curves down below Cedar Creek Hatchery alongside the road.
The upper river is lined with private property until you hit the Castle Rock Park area. You can get out there and walk upstream (or down). Check with Cedar Creek Hatchery first to find out if they're letting fish up past their electric weir.
Three Rivers Cedar Creek Hatchery: Chinook and steelhead fishing conditions require daytime stealth. It's becoming very low. Fish really early or late if this fits your schedule.
Below Cedar Creek Hatchery down to the mouth of Three Rivers: Fine for Spring Chinook.
Castle Rock Park: Low.
Fishing above Cedar Creek Fish Hatchery: When conditions are favorable... start up high on Tillamook County's Three Rivers and work your way down to Cedar Creek Hatchery and below as noted above. Stay in touch with the Hebo Weather Forecast.
Three Rivers is open (above the Cedar Creek fish hatchery weir) all year for hatchery steelhead and open for Fall Chinook Aug 1 - Dec 31. I'm pretty sure there is no fishing deadline above Three Rivers Hatchery. Check here.
Worth mentioning again: Is Three Rivers Hatchery allowing Winter Steelhead to migrate upriver at this time? Give them a shout.
A chrome Nestucca River System Winter Steelhead...
Wonder what hot Winter Steelhead rig he was using?
Wonder what hot Winter Steelhead rig he was using?Salmon and steelhead:
Bobber and drift fishing for salmon and steelhead...
...including hardware and flies... it's all good. Save your hardware for clear water conditions although... it's still productive when Three Rivers is off-color.
We carry all of that stuff here at Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods. Check out our Color Tip above.
Sure! But only what you feel comfortable sharing :-)
What's your favorite Winter Steelhead Jig? Why? What size bobber is your favorite for Nestucca Fall Chinook? Are you sold on rubber worms for steelhead and salmon?
What if your contribution becomes a Page on our Hebo Tackle and Bait Shop Website... including your photos? Let's hear from you!
Neskowin Creek does have a run of wild salmon and Winter steelhead. I'm not sure about the numbers. There's a lot of bank access up there. I know a gal who lets the Game Commission use her river-front property to monitor Neskowin Creek wild salmon and Winter Steelhead returns. Click here to find more information.
No floating crafts allowed.
I'll check in with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to learn more about the Neskowin Creek wild fish populations survey when I have more time. Sorry I haven't done this yet... didn't forget.
Neskowin Creek offers a diversity of water types. Lure, bobber, drift and fly fishing can all be enjoyed!
Years ago I was bobber fishing for Winter Steelhead from the bank, up high on the Siletz River. It was getting late so I hiked back down to my rig.
As a last resort... I stopped at my favorite Siletz River Winter Steelhead spot once again. I fished about 10 minutes.
Nothing. I went up to my rig, grabbed my steelhead drift rod and hooked 4 Winter Steelhead. The action stopped.
I went up to my next favorite Winter Steelhead drift and tried it one more time. Hooked 2 more. It got dark and I came home.
Fish above 101 Bridge if the Big Nestucca River Level drops to 8' (5.35' this Sunday morning). Use this as a gauge. Do you want to fish below the bridge? Always wait a day afterwards if Neskowin Creek fishery is dropping.
Today Lincoln County Neskowin Creek steelhead fishing conditions require a stealthy approach. It's pretty darned low... concentrate on a larger Spring Chinook Oregon Coastal River.
This stream will be the first Oregon Coast Winter Steelhead river to drop back into fishing shape after a really high water. Furthermore...
There needs to be plenty of freshwater (along with a decent high tide) to give Winter Steelhead a safe passage up river from the ocean surf. The mouth is constantly changing. More about this below.
You can fish the Neskowin Creek "tidewater" area as well when the river conditions are good. We used to fish it from the south side before those houses were built and...
...along the highway before all the trees grew up out of the rip-rap.
Actually... this is not really tidewater when Neskowin Creek is running low along with low tides. But, when this Winter steelhead creek is high, the ocean is roily and the tide is high (now)... it'll push up into this area creating a "Neskowin Creek Tidewater."
Important to know: As noted above... the mouth of Neskowin Creek is constantly shifting. At times... the river needs to be really high along with an extremely high tide...
...so Winter Steelhead and Fall Chinook/Coho salmon have safe passage up into freshwater.
Again... don't forget to stop by Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods and Little Nestucca Deli to say hi. Check out our homemade food menu to warm up!

Speaking of... I've fished the Kilchis River all throughout December in the past during Fall Chinook season.
It will be fishable before the other Tillamook River System Chinook and Winter Steelhead streams. Using the Wilson River as a gauge, I knew exactly when it was good to go but can't recall. Sorry. I'll figure this out for you for future use (I'm not going to just "Google it").
We're really busy building our online and offline business right now. It might be a while before we cover a greater area of Tillamook outdoor/fishing news updates. Let us know what you expect here.
