All river conditions/predictions below are based on the current Hebo area forecast/conditions at 6:30 am Saturday November 15.
New updates are set for Sunday pm November 16.
Check in daily for fresh, hot off the press Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods fishing updates!
If the Nestucca River is under 7' (is today), Jackson drift above the mouth of Three Rivers is a good bet. We bank fished it from the north side of the river....
The water is perfect for here today!
I just drove by a few days ago and it's open now for bank access. It was closed several weeks ago. Possibly the farmer closes it down when the cattle are grazing in that area. I knocked on his door to ask but nobody answered.
If you don't mind fishing one spot all day... put your boat in at Farmer Creek and float down to Jackson's Drift and drop anchor. I've had consistent success here in the past when they're around. However, this is not a good idea since the "Preacher's Drift" was open to bank access when I checked Tuesday, November 11.
The faster water feeding the run is good hardware and drift fishing water. I've caught them here as well bobber fishing. Most bank fishermen fished the lower part including myself. I haven't fished Jackson's Drift for a few years... maybe it changed.
FISH HARDWARE FOR SALMON AS WELL. NUMEROUS TIMES, I'LL FISH BAIT FIRST, THEN FISH A BLADE AND A NAIL A FISH.
Water over 7'? If the Big Nesucca is off-color and Three Rivers is green-clear... fish the seam where both rivers meet. You can bobber or drift fish. Also, try being lazy and plunking. We used to do this back in the day... I have no idea why more Nestucca Fishermen don't give this method a whirl! Fish will move up-river in this seam, close to the bank.
Speaking of...
Don't sit around at home if you think the Nestucca River is too high for you because...
...it looks like this will be a good bet (if you feel lazy) for today even though it's under 7' (6.16'). Also use your other options.
Or... this works at lower levels as well... just tone things down.
For today and through the weekend... If you plunk, we've got chartreuse and orange spin-in-glos. Use the biggest size we carry with a large hook as well when the water is high and off-color. Duane will set you up. Better yet, add some bait and you're good to go.
If you're drift-fishing, use plenty of weight and walk it along the bottom, slowly.
Again... use less weight, smaller hooks, etc., should you decide to throw out your lawn chair at the mouth of Three Rivers this weekend...
...and most of next week if you're plunking (or standing and drift or bobber fishing) and the Nestucca River continues to drop.
The mouth of Three Rivers is PERFECT for this weekend...
...and you're using "invisible to the fish" florescent fishing line... I've studied some underwater photos of those lines in action. The "invisible" florescent fishing lines stick out like a sore thumb.
Maxima gray leads he way... use it if you're concerned.
Do chrome, fresh salmon care? Who knows. Confidence does matter though.
Check out the Big Nestucca River graph. Keep an eye on
our Hebo weather as well. It's 6.16' right now and dropping slowly although it bumped up a little last night. I'm predicting it'll keep right on dropping slowly while staying around 6' this weekend through next week according to the Hebo weather forecast.
Check out our Color Tip below. This doesn't mean you can't use other colors, it's just that you'll need your presentation to be closer to the Nestucca salmon before color shifting to gray, then black (shorter-range colors).
Try not to over-think though. Fishing properly where the fish are is most important. Your line needs to be in the water.
Possibly salmon and steelhead are more aware of spawning colors as they work their way upstream. Try florescent pink, red and orange (short-range colors... even though they'll shift to black sooner than the yellows, greens and blues in clearer water).
If the water is turbid, use colors the fish can see. No, not red. Use black, florescent chartreuse and a gold blade (If you're fishing a spinner/spoon).
Don't pay the extra for florescent black since it's hardly florescent. Also, plain chartreuse will shift to gray sooner than florescent over a given distance!
Fl red (pink, orange) will work but the fish needs to be really close (for instance... places like Three Rivers Hatchery fishing environment) to see it before shfting to gray, then black.
Adding scent will help your success :-)
About florescent:
If the packaging says "Florescent"...is it really? Shine a black light on the item and...
...if it doesn't glow... it's not florescent. I get my bucktail from Nature's Spirit for tying streamer flies. They're known for top of the line deer hair. I've had to send back their product numerous times because it wasn't really florescent even though the packaging said otherwise.
Most red, orange, pink and chartreuse drift bobbers and yarns are florescent.
Water cold-cool and green? Is it cloudy or rainy? Use florescent chartreuse, orange and green. Spinner blade: Matte silver.
Sunny and cold-cool/clear water? You might try black with or without blue or green. Spinner blade: Matte silver but down-size from above or less-bright gold or brass.
Chartreuse, green and orange might work, just less of it.
Water all temperatures? Turbid? Sunny or cloudy? Go with black and Chartreuse. Hardware finish should be gold. As noted below... Three Rivers Hatchery fishes well in turbid, high water.
_________________________
Matte silver is the brightest finish on this planet and won't reflect the background like shiny silver. Scaling down from silver... brass, then copper and finally black.
_________________________
Combine colors for contrast against the background water color which is viewed by the fish. You can work this with your lure as well. For example... a chartreuse-backed metallic spinner blade with pink lure tape lines or circles.
If you think you're using red but it's black as viewed by the fish... are you ok with that? I guess so if you really want to use black :-)
Time to fish up in freshwater. However... if you put your time in... you might have some luck (If the Big Nestucca is below 6'... ok now). I've caught fish below the Pacific City Bridge when the Nestucca River was running 6' or less in November...
...on spinners (current too strong for bobber fishing) when the color was good and the water was clean. Ditto Little Nestucca Tidewater between the boat ramp and 101 Bridge.
Now we're into holding tides except for minus tides late in the day. There'a also a few decent high tides. Click here to check it out. Low tide isn't very low, high tide not too high (mostly).
This time of year, fishing can be equally good on holding or big tidal swings.
Barometer: I've never worried about barometer changes up in freshwater (except for a fast rising river and other factors associated with it)...
as much as how it effects tidewater success.
Cloverdale? Still very tide-effected up here but save this for when the Nestucca River drops way down. During very low water times it's fun to fish here. On incoming tide, you can spot them moving upstream.
Pacific City/Big Nestucca tidewater was off-color with a lot of debris... it should be fine now. You'll be able to fish it the next couple of days and through next week... maybe mostly all by yourself. "Out-going" current most of the time due to the large amount of fresh-water.
Drift bobbers and other floating Nestucca fishing tackle are drifting down to tidewater and right out into the ocean. Cape Kiawanda is a great spot to beach comb these florescent treasures!
Bank and boat fishing Nestucca River:
Even though Big Nestucca tidewater fishing is pretty much over for now keep this in mind for later...
Try above the Woods bridge. There's plenty of pull-outs above the last house. When the river pulls away from the road all the way up to Cloverdale...
Don't be afraid to ask the Dairy Farmers for permission.
Lastly, there's great bank access at Cloverdale below the boat ramp which is behind the shops :-) You'll need a special pass to fish here.
When you get up into freshwater... Dairy farm permission still applies to the lower river as well as up high. Seems you need to go way up high for more bank access which is great if the lower river is too dirty to fish.
Ask permission from non-farmer land owners as well.
Checking out new areas like these at low water levels is a good way to spot tackle-grabbing snags before fishing.
It'll come up fast and drop fast as well. If it's coming up in the am and off color... it could be fishable later in the day! Fish below Stella Falls and check out the deadline markers. Fish upriver and downriver from here as well.
There should be Sea-Run Cutthroat around all the way up to the headwaters. Seems nobody fishes for them. I've caught many while winter steelhead fishing the Little Nestucca... the last one I caught was around 20"... no kidding.
Some years there's a run of Coho Salmon in the Little Nestucca River. They're aggressive hardware and fly (streamer) biters.
If the water is high and off-color, fish at the mouth of several little tributaries feeding this Hebo area stream dumping in clear/green water. Fish the transistion.
For those of you that like a clear, decent flow of water...
This water surely isn't turbid!Today this Hebo area river should be fishable way up high and down lower. If low, clear water is your thing... fish way up high after it drops back down (like now).
It's getting on the low side way up high for fresh Little Nestucca Salmon. Sea-Run Cutthroat... no problem...
...throughout the rest of the week. I've caught summer steelhead fishing up here this time of year. They'll have a red stripe but they retain some glimmer, unlike "dark" Winter Steelhead.
Looks like the Little Nestucca River conditions will stay the same as it is now... the time of this posting... for several days
Neskowin Creek does have a few wild salmon around. You can fish it above 101 bridge when the Big Nestucca is a little below 8'! There's a lot of bank access up there. I know a gal who lets the Game Comission use her river-front property to monitor wild salmon returns. Click here to find more information.
No floating crafts allowed.
Today fish below the 101 bridge and above. It'll be really clear and getting pretty low above the Neskowin Creek bridge. Fish the Neskowin Creek tidewater area as well. We used to fish it from the south side before those houses were built and...
...along the hi-way before all the trees grew up out of the rip-rap.
For you Little Nestucca fly fishermen out there...
...expect to do a lot of roll casting. Don't just swing your fly... strip it in as well. Do both. This way you can cover more water efficiently. Slow it down since water temps are chilly.
Unless you know the holding areas really well, don't invest too much time into tying your fly pattern. Keep it simple and you'll fish it correctly without worrying about snagging up.
If streamer fishing is your thing... you can cover a bunch of water like...
...fishing hardware on the Little Nestucca (this can be a ton of fun). This is productive when the water is cold/cool and clear (now). Slow it down. However... Coho don't seem to mind a faster retrieve.
Nothing like covering a bunch of water while staying warm by hiking!
Other conventional methods are all good... just adjust the size/color to water conditions.
You can find lots of tackle that floated down one of our Nestucca system rivers here! Check out tidewater or on the beach... close to the mouth of the Big Nestucca River...
Hunting for little Nestucca fishing treasures!
Hunting for little Nestucca fishing treasures! This Hebo area river (Little Nestucca) drops fast and salmon will start holding up in tidewater again if the river gets fairly low. It's fishable right now... expect salmon to be cruising by heading upriver.
Fish below the Little Nestucca boat ramp down to the 101 bridge. Or... fish above the ramp up to the first bend.
If you have a boat, you can fish all the way up to the next bridge and beyond until you hit the first riffle if the tide is just right although...
There's plenty of freshwater around now for easier access. Look out for submerged logs up there where the river narrows.
You can fish here for the next few days. When the Little Nestucca River drops more the salmon will slow down and possibly hold here for some time through this month.
Bobber and bait. Spinners. Flies. If you're not a Nestucca fly fisherman, don't be afraid to fish a fly below your bobber if bait isn't doing the trick. I've seen this work.
A 2 oz bobber and weight is a good all-around bait fishing rig for here. Less can be used on low slack tide if it's not windy.
Low tide: Average depth about 7' above Little Nestucca Boat Ramp and shallow up as you work your way down towards the bridge below the ramp. High tide: Same or a couple feet deeper.
A half ounce up to 1 oz weight is ideal for spinner fishing... depending upon the tide and fishing location (above or below the Little Nestucca tidewater boat ramp). As the tide slows down, increase the blade size so you're lure catches more water enabling a slow retrieve. Slow is the key for Nestucca Chinook.
Bring your fish in today... we want to keep our customers/visitors updated with new pics! Speaking of... can you beat this 22lb Nestucca Chinook caught before the last really high water...
This boy would rather be here than playing video games!
This boy would rather be here than playing video games!...and these caught Monday the 12th ...
A perfect Nestucca River Fall day
A perfect Nestucca River Fall dayUnlike other Nestucca River fisheries, the hatchery does fish in turbid, high water. Fish right at your feet and out farther.
When Three Rivers drops and clears after being high and roily (now)...
Park behind Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods and walk downstream (when the Big Nestucca is running about 6' or less is best but this is not set in stone). Or... fish in the S-curves down below Cedar Creek Hatchery alongside the road.
The upper river is lined with private property until you hit Castle Rock Park. You can get out there and walk upstream (or down). Check with Cedar Creek Hatchery first to find out if they're letting fish up past their electric weir.
The Cedar Creek Hatchery should be fine today barring any landslides (on the low side). Castle Rock Park area is getting pretty low. Below Hebo Sporting Goods... Three Rivers has great color and flow.
Stop in for a warm meal from our Hebo deli and share pics of your Three Rivers salmon!
Fishing above Cedar Creek Fish Hatchery:
A
river raise was needed before fishing up at Castle Rock Park area and we got it! The water level should be a 6 on a scale of 1-10 today (on the low side).
Still... wouldn't hurt to fish here. Go up as high as you feel comfortable fishing and work your way down to the Mouth of Three Rivers. Looks like this will be a good bet this weekend and throughout next week according to the Hebo weather forecast.
It's open (above the Cedar Creek fish hatchery weir) all year for hatchery steelhead and open for Fall Chinook Aug 1 - Dec 31. I'm pretty sure there is no fishing deadline above Three Rivers Hatchery. Check here.
Bobbers, drift fishing for salmon as well as hardware and flies... it's all good. Save your hardware for clearer water conditions (today and later). We carry all of that stuff here at Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods. Check out our Color Tip above.
Swing, strip and drift you flies. Same with spinners although...
I usually fish my blades accross current.
Again... don't forget to stop by Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods and Little Nestucca Deli to say hi! Check out our homemade food menu to warm up!
Flies? Yes! As our Hebo rivers website grows... we'll really dig into fly fishing for steelhead and salmon as well as other topics...
We'll also start building content pages about bait, bobber and lure, etc., fishing in the future! Many other topics will be included (as per your request). Get involved... don't be shy and let us know what type of content you would like to see on our Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods/Deli Website.
Additionally...
Worth repeating... maybe, in the future, you can chime in with your advice/experiences, etc. We'll use it as a content page for our Hebo Sporting Goods and Deli Website (if you don't mind the whole world seeing it). You can include your photos as well :-)
Need Bait? Click Here.
If you forgot your lunch... we've got you covered including clam chowder or tomato bisque soup!
We'll probably build a Table of Contents at the top if this Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods/Deli Blog page if it becomes too long and/or...
...split it into two Pages (sections) for your easy viewing (getting to the facts you need asap!).
