When I was 13 years old... I had to learn about salmon and steelhead fishing on my own.  No internet.  No driver's license.  I came up the hard way.  Looking back... I wouldn't trade my steelhead and salmon journey memories for another.  It'll be much easier for you but...

Don't get caught up in all the hype... keep it simple and keep going in one direction.  There's lot's of good resources available about fishing for steelhead and salmon.  However... there are those who just want your money and don't speak from experience.

Keep Your Line in The Water

Driving around, unless you're on a new salmon or steelhead stream, is a waste of time unless...

...it's necessary to move from one location to another while having a plan in place.


Preparation

Rigging up or doing anything else that could have been done before your fishing trip (unless it's too dark to fish anyway) also costs valuable fishing time.  This is especially important if your fishing time is limited.

Furthermore... everything needed while you're fishing should be easily and quickly accessible.


Proper Clothing

Getting wet and cold... well... you might just as well stay home.


Proper Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Gear

When you finally hook your first steelhead or salmon... losing it as a result of faulty gear including tackle is the worst feeling in the world!  For instance... check your fishing line and knots frequently while keeping your fishing hooks razor sharp!

You don't need the best gear when fishing for steelhead trout and salmon, but quality is important...
